Aladdin Security Alert: Serflog and Kelvir Viruses

Aladdin eSafe proactively protects against these fast-spreading threats

CHICAGO, March 8, 2005, - Aladdin Knowledge Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ: ALDN) today announced that its Aladdin eSafe integrated content security and anti virus solution proactively identified and blocked the new medium to high risk Win32.Serflog.a and Win32.Kelvir.a.viruses. Aladdin eSafe customers were protected against these new threats, as well as future threats, in real time, without the need to issue signature updates. As the number and sophistication of threats increase, solutions relying on signature-based anti virus protection are no longer adequate.

Win32.Serflog.a

Win32.Serflog.a is an MSN Messenger worm that also spreads by dropping copies of itself into folders usually shared by P2P (Peer to Peer) clients. The message received by MSN Messenger users will be "????omg click this!," followed by the URL from which the worm can be downloaded. Win32.Serflog.a drops several hidden files, attempts to spread via MSN Messenger and often attempts to terminate several security-related processes while also attempting to prevent access to several related Web sites.

Win32.Kelvir.a and Win32.Kelvir.b

Win32.Kelvir.a is an MSN Messenger worm which spreads by providing a URL containing an infected file. Users who click on the link will be infected by the worm. The message received by MSN Messenger users will be "omg this is funny!," followed by the URL containing the worm. When the worm is executed it attempts to drop multiple copies of itself onto the infected system, ensures it is executed on every startup by modifying registry entries, and spreads onward by sending itself to all of the user's known contacts.
